Barnwell School District 45 is the largest of three school districts in Barnwell County and located in the eastern part of Barnwell County. The district includes the town of Barnwell and the lower half of Barnwell County, which is located in the coastal plains of southwestern South Carolina. The district is governed by a five-member board of trustees elected for three-year terms. The district is fiscally sound with balanced budgets and excellent audit reports.

Development/Graduate Courses

| Barnwell School District 45 is a member of the USC-Salkehatchie Consortium which provides staff development opportunities and courses of study leading to recertification at no cost to teachers of the district. Graduate courses are available at the University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie at Allendale (17 miles from Barnwell), the University of South Carolina at Aiken (37 miles from Barnwell,), and South Carolina State University at Orangeburg (38 miles from Barnwell). The main campus of the University of South Carolina is 60 miles from Barnwell. |

* For 20 consecutive years, Barnwell Schools has met all standards of quality which evaluate a district's performance in achievement test results, accreditation deficiencies, drop-out rates, student and staff attendance. These standards are set each year by the South Carolina State Board of Education. * Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus is taught at Barnwell High School. * Art, music, and physical education are taught in all schools of the district. * Psychological and health services are supplied by professional personnel. Students are screened for speech and hearing. Also speech, hearing, OT/PT therapy is available. * There are over 500 computers in the district that are used to assist with instruction and administration. * School Lunch Program: 3 cafeterias serve an average of 1900 lunches and 750 breakfasts daily. * Students at Guinyard-Butler Middle School and Barnwell High School may participate in a variety of extracurricular and interscholastic activities. Through participation in the Scarlet Knights Band, students at both schools may pursue musical interests. Leadership skills are developed though organizations such as Student Council, National Honor Society, and Junior Beta Club. * The Teacher Cadet Program at Barnwell High School offers an opportunity for qualifying juniors and seniors to study the education process and take a close look at teaching careers. * An Army Junior ROTC is active at Barnwell High School. * Students in each school benefit from services contributed by community volunteers, businesses, and industries. Each school is adopted by local businesses and industries. * Parents and community members have opportunities for active involvement in Barnwell Schools through School Improvement Councils, Scarlet Knights Band Boosters Club, and the Warhorse Booster Club. * Citizens in Barnwell School District 45 who
are retired or who are 60 or older may receive a GOLDEN PASS.
The pass allows free admission to home athletic events and other activities. |

in which to be involved. Among these are: Lions and Lioness Clubs, Business/Professional
Women, Circle Theatre, Scouts, Garden Clubs, Homemakers Clubs, Eastern
Star, Masons, American Legion, United Way, Cancer Society, Red Cross, Heart
Association, Tennis Club and Bridge Clubs. |

| Barnwell County has three challenging
golf courses, numerous lighted tennis and basketball courts, six baseball
parks, ten softball parks, football fields and soccer fields. Over 2,000
youth and adults are involved in city recreation programs which offer
youth Soccer, Teeball, Dixie Youth Baseball, Basketball, and Cheerleading,
as well as city and church league softball/basketball for adults. There
is a man-make lake within the city limits of Barnwell, which affords good
fishing, boating, and skiing. The Barnwell State Park, only 7 miles from
the city of Barnwell, has a large public fishing area, nature trails, and
a number of picnic and camping areas. Deer, quail, dove, turkey and rabbit
hunting, combined with good fishing, make Barnwell County a real sportsman's
paradise. Leisure time can easily become a busy time in this area...with
the mountains, seashore, Carowinds, Six Flags, and Disney World within
easy driving distance from Barnwell, South Carolina. |
